Blood Mage Conversation

To do:
Rip the conversation.

Text and voice for an unused confrontation from Wynne about the player using blood magic after killing Uldred exist in the game's files, but are never used in the main game. They can be reactivated via mods, but the conversation sets a few plot flags that may cause problems in the epilogue and in the expansion pack, Awakening.

(Source: Dialogue Mod)

Taint Status

To do:
Rip the text.

A status for being tainted (having darkspawn blood on you) exists, but there seems to be no way to reactivate it and there are no healing items associated with it.

Shale

Originally, Shale was supposed to be recruitable without any DLC. The quest was supposed to take place in Redcliffe village. The actual process to recruit Shale is not known, but it involved a cottage named “Wilhelm's Cottage” (which is actually the cottage to the right when the player enters the village from the world map), a note in the cottage, a note in the abandoned general store, and a Golem Control Rod in the tavern.

The cottage can only be accessed on the PC version via console commands, and when entered it contains a note named “Circle Note”, an early version of the “A Decades-Old Letter” note used to help recruit Shale in the final version. Reading this letter spawns a letter called “Note of Sale” in the abandoned general store, which states that there is a Golem Control Rod in the tavern. After reading the note, a conversation with the tavern owner, Lloyd, can be accessed, completing which will activate a previously-inactive barrel, which contains a special Golem Control Rod named “Lloyd's Control Rod”. Nothing else can be done after obtaining the rod, as there is no Shale to activate.

Jowan Quest

A fully-functioning quest to resolve Jowan's storyline if the player let him go at Redcliffe exists and can be started, but there is no way to complete it under normal circumstances because of a bug.

The unused parts of the quest involves going to a spot marked on the map that is named “Jowan”. There, you will find him rescuing a few people from darkspawn. When the enemies are dead, the player can either let him go or waste him. No matter the conclusion, the quest ends and the player can receive their reward.

Unobtainable Items

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

All of these items have complete inventory data, despite the fact that you can't actually see most of them in game. Some are in the game, but are only found on NPCs who don't have them in their inventory (for stealing/looting).

Aeducan Shield

Item ID:gen_im_arm_shd_sml_aed
Type:Buckler
Material:Iron (Tier 1)
Requires:10 strength
Strength Modifier:1.00
Fatigue:0.00%
Defense:1.50
Missile Deflection:1.50
Stats:+1 strength
Value:70 silver
Description:Smith House Turana makes these for all the warriors who bear arms for House Aeducan.

Not to be confused with the 'Aeducan Shield' plot item (ID bdn200im_shield) which you pick up in the Dwarf Noble origin. This buckler is equipped by Vortag Gavorn and some royal Orzammar guards, but cannot be obtained by the player...which may well be for the better, because, while appropriate for the early game, these stats are really unimpressive for a royal shield.

Ancient Elven Boots

Item ID:gen_im_arm_bot_med_elv
Type:Medium boots
Material:Veridium (Tier 4)
Requires:22 strength
Armor:1.60
Fatigue:1.72%
Stats:+1 constitution
Value:1 gold, 44 silver
Description:The plates that sheathe these boots mimic the shapes of leaves. When equipped in a set with ancient elven armor, helm, and gloves, the character gains a bonus to defense.

In the console versions of DA:O, the Ancient Elven Boots are obtained by asking Ser Bryant in the Lothering chantry if he can assist you; he gives you a key to the cabinet where these boots are held. In the computer versions, the boots never appear. Consequently, the Ancient Elven armor set bonus is also unobtainable without console commands.

Armband

Item ID:gen_im_gift_armband
Type:Gift
Value:60 silver
Description:A golden armband with mysterious runes carved into it.

Just one of several jewelry gifts which were left out of the game. This item provides +5 approval from any party member you give it to.

It's possible that the 'general' jewelry gifts weren't used because most of Morrigan's personal gifts are jewelry, and having a lot of other jewelry gifts would make it impossible to figure out which go to Morrigan and which can go to the rest of the party.

Black Gemmed Ring

Item ID:gen_im_gift_ring4
Type:Gift
Value:15 silver
Description:A ring of black metal decorated with a large red gemstone.

Another piece of jewelry. Again, this provides +5 approval from any party member you give it to.

Botanist's Map of Thedas

Item ID:gen_im_gift_map4
Type:Gift
Value:?
Description:A botanist's map of Thedas, showing where rare plants may be found on the continent.

Another gift, but this one's more specific. This gift provides +10 approval points from Loghain and +5 from any other party member. You're supposed to be able to retrieve this map from a chest in Redcliffe Castle after the Landsmeet, but the room it's in is inaccessible at that point.

Chanter Robes

Item ID:gen_im_cth_mag_cht
Type:Clothing
Value:35 silver
Description:These robes identify a chanter—one who has taken a vow of silence in devotion to the Chantry.

Not to be confused with the nearly-identical 'Chanter Robes' (ID lel000im_sketch_robes), Sketch's default outfit in the Leliana's Song DLC. What's the difference? The DLC robes are restricted to mages, while the unobtainable main game robes have no class restriction. Not that you'd want to wear one anyway, since it doesn't have stats.

Circle Letter

Item ID:arl160it_circle_letter
Type:Plot item
Value:none
Description:This letter is so old and faded it is barely legible. The broken wax seal bears the mark of the Circle of Magi.

As mentioned above, the Circle Letter is part of the cut Shale quest.

The codex entry for this letter is extremely similar to the Decades-Old Letter found during 'The Golem in Honnleath':

Bard stories - the warden
Circle Letter (Unused)A Decades-Old Letter (Used)
This letter is marked as having been written by First Enchanter Arlen of the Circle of Magi over twenty years ago:

Madam,

I can assure you that the Circle of Magi is not a sacrilegious institution and that, indeed, we operate under the supervision of the Chantry. It would make our investigation of your husband's death much easier if you would simply co-operate with us. I am disappointed to hear that you sold most of Mage Wilhelm's personal property to the general store in your village. Our investigator reports that the store owner was uncooperative in recovering the golem's control rod. As such, we cannot discern whether Wilhelm's golem was responsible for his murder. We do, however, appreciate your gift of Wilhelm's journals, and we will keep them safe here in the tower at Lake Calenhad. The golem will simply have to remain where it is unless the villagers can find a means to destroy it. Our condolences to you and Wilhelm's children for your loss.

Madam,

I can assure you that the Circle of Magi is not a sacrilegious institution and that, indeed, we operate under the supervision of the Chantry. It would make our investigation of your husband's death much easier if you would simply co-operate with us. I am disappointed to hear that you sold the golem's activation rod--I understand both it and your husband were of invaluable aid to King Maric during the war against Orlais. Without the rod, we cannot discern whether Wilhelm's golem was responsible for his murder. The golem will simply have to remain where it is unless the villagers can find a means to destroy it. Our condolences to you and your son for your loss. I imagine it is of little consolation to you, but your husband is much admired here and will be missed.

Maker keep you.

--First Enchanter Arlen

The differences in the texts reflect the changes made to the quest's plot after the decision to turn Shale into a DLC character. The early letter also hints that you may have been able to find Wilhelm's journals during the Circle Tower questline.

Dead Metal Bucket

Item ID:gen_im_arm_hel_men
Type:Medium helmet
Material:Silverite (Tier 6)
Requires:30 strength
Armor:2.10
Fatigue:1.88%
Stats:+25 mental resistance
Value:4 gold, 50 silver
Description:The maker's mark traces this helm to Camber, one of the first human settlements to fall to the darkspawn. The city is long a ruin, but strangely the helm bears non-traditional elements.

Sadly, not actually a bucket. Instead it's just a helmet with good stats and no indication as to why it's not in the game.

Diamond Earrings

Item ID:gen_im_gift_earring
Type:Gift
Value:5 silver
Description:A pair of elegant diamond drop earrings that sparkle in the light.

Diamonds are forever. Diamond earrings? Not so much, apparently. These give you +5 approval points from any party member you give them to.

Dwarven Defender

Item ID:gen_im_wep_rng_cbw_dwv
Type:Crossbow
Material:Sylvanwood (Tier 6)
Requires:26 strength
Damage:12.00
Critical Chance:3.00%
Armor Penetration:10.00
Range:50.00
Stats:+3 dexterity, +6 damage vs. darkspawn
Value:1 gold, 80 silver
Description:The Dwarven Defender was once wielded by the Grey Warden Koral Bemot. It is said that Koral Bemot single-handedly defended the gates of Orzammar from invading darkspawn using this very crossbow, and the weapon still bears the scars of that legendary battle.

The name of this item may or may not be a reference to BioWare's previous Neverwinter Nights.

Dwarven Guard Armor

Item ID:gen_im_arm_cht_hvy_dwg
Type:Heavy chestpiece
Material:Iron (Tier 1)
Requires:18 strength
Armor:6.25
Fatigue:14.00%
Stats:+1 armor
Value:90 silver
Description:This style of armor has been worn by the Orzammar City Guard for countless generations.

This piece of unobtainable armor has the same model as two other pieces of obtainable armor--Dwarven Heavy Armor and Superior Dwarven Guard Armor.

Endrin's Mace

Item ID:gen_im_wep_mel_mac_end
Type:Mace
Material:Silverite (Tier 6)
Requires:28 strength
Strength Modifier:1.00
Damage:7.50
Critical Chance:0.75%
Armor Penetration:7.00
Runes:2
Stats:+15% cold resistance, +10 mental resistance
Value:2 gold, 45 silver
Description:A fine mace, this was a gift made by one of the premier clans of Orzammar to King Endrin Stonehammer, commemorating the construction of Stonehammer Hall.

Gateway Amulet

Item ID:gen_im_acc_amu_amu8
Type:Amulet
Stats:+20% spirit resistance, -1 willpower
Value:30 silver
Description:A mirror on a silver chain, etched with glyphs. The mirror reflects nothing, only swirling mist.

This amulet is held by an NPC in Lothering and was probably meant to be stealable, but the NPC in question isn't selectable as a theft target, so there's no way to get this item.

Greagoir's Shield

Item ID:gen_im_arm_shd_twr_lcs
Type:Heavy shield
Material:Whitewood (Tier 4)
Requires:30 strength
Strength Modifier:1.00
Fatigue:5.16%
Defense:6.00
Missile Deflection:7.00
Stats:+6 defense, +10% fire resistance, +4% spell resistance
Value:4 gold, 59 silver, 97 coppers
Description:This is probably an heirloom of Greagoir's family and is quite old, as the image painted on it appears to be Alamarri. The wood is very smooth.

Bard Stories - The Warden's Relics Mac Os Catalina

You'd think that this would be lootable after Greagoir's death, but it's not. Since he actually has it equipped, it doesn't appear in his inventory. Whether this was intentional or you were supposed to be able to get this shield at some point is unknown.

Greater Elixir of Grounding Recipe

Item ID:gen_im_cft_hrb_406
Type:Recipe
Requires:Herbalism Rank 4
Value:7 gold, 5 silver
Description:Created by the Tranquil of the Circle of Magi, this handy potion can protect the user for a short time against lightning strikes and electrical damage.

This one is unused due to a bug. It should be sold by a shopkeeper in Haven after you clear the town, but said shopkeep never spawns. Greater Elixirs of Grounding are still obtainable without the recipe, but only as rare loot and expensive shop items.

Recipe: 2 Frozen Lightning, 1 Flask, 1 Distillation Agent, 2 Concentrator Agent

Greater Tome of the Mortal Vessel

Item ID:gen_im_qck_book_attribute2
Type:Tome
Value:20 gold
Description:A relic of the Alamarri, the barbarian people among whom Andraste was born. Their drive to perfect the mortal form was unparalleled, and study of their ways grants a significant increase in the reader's base attributes.

Gives the reader +2 attribute points to be immediately distributed. While this tome appears in two post-game DLC (The Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt), it was initially supposed to be in the vanilla game: similar to the recipe above, this is supposed to be sold by a shopkeeper who appears in Haven if you killed the old shopkeeper but still sided with the Cult of Andraste during the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, but the shopkeeper never appears. This item is mentioned by the official strategy guide, meaning that it was cut very late in development.

Harrowmont Guard Shield

Item ID:gen_im_arm_shd_sml_har
Type:Buckler
Material:variable (Tiers 1-7)
Requires:10 strength
Strength Modifier:1.00
Fatigue:0.0%
Defense:1.50
Missile Deflection:1.50
Value:6 silver
Description:Four different smith houses make these shields for House Harrowmont. There is no sign indicating which made this one.

A simple shield equipped by many of Harrowmont's guards (natch), but can't be obtained by the player.

Heavy Gold Ring

Item ID:gen_im_gift_ring3
Type:Gift
Value:12 silver
Description:A heavy and ornate gold ring decorated with intricate scrollwork and festooned with jewels.

More unused jewelry. This gives +5 approval from whichever party member you give it to.

Bard Stories - The Warden's Relics Mac Os Catalina

Howe Guard Shield

Item ID:gen_im_arm_shd_sml_how
Type:Buckler
Material:variable (Tiers 1-7)
Requires:10 strength
Strength Modifier:1.00
Fatigue:0.0%
Defense:1.50
Missile Deflection:1.50
Value:20 silver
Description:This has the bear of the arling of Amaranthine painted on it. It's seen quite a bit of use, and much of the paint is chipped.

Bard Stories - The Warden's Relics Mac Os Pro

Another type of guard shield, this one equipped by soldiers serving Arl Howe. This has identical base stats to the Harrowmont Guard Shield above, but is worth over three times as much (and is equally unobtainable by the player).

King Maric's Blade

Item ID:gen_im_wep_mel_lsw_mar
Type:Longsword
Material:Silverite (Tier 6)
Requires:27 strength
Strength Modifier:1.00
Damage:10.50
Critical Chance:3.00%
Armor Penetration:3.50
Runes:2
Stats:+10% cold resistance, +6 damage vs. darkspawn, +10% to healing effects received
Value:2 gold, 40 silver
Description:Rumored to have been found by Cailan's father in the Deep Roads, this dwarven blade was famously wielded during the Orlesian occupation of Ferelden. A small inscription on the hilt reads simply 'Katriel', but its meaning is unknown.

An early version of the much more impressive 'Maric's Blade' (ID kcc_im_wep_mel_lsw_mar) found in the Return to Ostagar DLC. This indicates that it might have been possible to return to Ostagar in the vanilla game, before the devs decided to make that into DLC.

Additionally, even if you add this sword to your inventory, there's a bug in the game which makes the '+X% to healing effects received' effect useless. (The final sword has health and stamina regeneration effects instead).

Magic Greatsword

Item ID:gen_im_wep_mel_gsw_mg1
Type:Greatsword
Material:Veridium (Tier 4)
Requires:26 strength
Strength Modifier:1.10
Damage:14.30
Critical Chance:1.95%
Armor Penetration:4.35
Runes:1
Stats:+1 damage, +4% spell resistance
Value:1 gold, 74 silver
Description:An enchanted blade folded with lyrium to make it more durable and more devastating in combat.

It's a magic greatsword. A magic greatsword which inexplicably has the same model as three different non-magical greatswords in Dragon Age II.

North Ward

Item ID:gen_im_acc_amu_men20
Type:Amulet
Stats:-1 strength, +20 mental resistance
Value:1 gold, 15 silver
Description:A strangely cold pendant that hangs heavy over the chest. Signed with a single Tevinter jeweler's mark, oddly inverted.

The data for this amulet is in the vanilla game, but the item itself can't be found anywhere. This was eventually added as loot in the Leliana's Song DLC.

Note of Sale

Item ID:arl170it_note_of_sale
Type:Plot item
Value:none
Description:A bill of sale for a 'crystal rod' purchased by Lloyd.

Another remnant of the early Shale recruitment quest.

Nugbane

Item ID:gen_im_wep_rng_cbw_dus
Type:Crossbow
Material:Whitewood (Tier 4)
Requires:18 strength
Damage:10.40
Critical Chance:2.60%
Armor Penetration:8.00
Range:46.00
Stats:+3 damage
Value:1 gold, 8 silver
Description:The crossbow was confiscated from Veklar, a roast nug vendor. Veklar, after having been led on a merry chase by a particularly cunning nug, ended up accidentally shooting at—and putting out the eye of—Guard-Commander Aisden of the Warrior Caste.

You're supposed to be able to steal this from the Mines Commander in the Orzammar Commons, but it's been mistakenly flagged as equipped, so it doesn't appear in his inventory.

Ornamental Sword

Item ID:gen_im_wep_mel_gsw_orn
Type:Greatsword
Material:Iron (Tier 1)
Requires:18 strength
Strength Modifier:1.10
Damage:11.00
Critical Chance:1.50%
Armor Penetration:3.00
Stats:Lucky, -5 attack, -1 damage
Value:2 gold, 33 silver
Description:An ornamental blade, it is the copy of a much more famous greatsword... but the craftsmanship that went into creating this one makes it quite valuable nevertheless.

A much less powerful version of Ser Cauthrien's Summer Sword (ID gen_im_wep_mel_gsw_sum). This replica is supposed to be looted from Gazarath in the Korcari Wilds, but it's bugged and never appears.

Remarkable Diamond

Bard Stories - The Warden's Relics Mac Os Download

Item ID:gen_im_gift_dia
Type:Gift
Value:6 gold
Description:A brilliant cut, colorless stone.

Gives +10 approval from Shale and +5 approval from any other party member you give it to. In the console versions, you can get remarkable diamonds as rare loot or buy them from Garin in the Orzammar Commons. In the PC/Mac versions, they don't appear at all, probably because of a bug.

Remarkable Garnet

Item ID:gen_im_gift_gar
Type:Gift
Value:80 silver
Description:A gem the shade of dried blood, dark red, nearly black.

Gives +10 approval from Shale and +5 approval from any other party member you give it to. Like the Remarkable Diamond above, this does not appear in the game for unknown reasons.

Robes

Item ID:gen_im_cth_mag_cha
Type:Clothing
Value:40 silver
Description:These are simple robes, made of wool and linen.

They're robes. Mages you meet in the Fade have them equipped.

As you can see, there are actually three different weapons called 'Shaperate's Blessing'. You're supposed to receive one of these three weapons (greatsword for warriors, mace for rogues, staff for mages) upon completing 'The Shaper's Life' codex entry, but it's bugged and all you receive is XP.

The staff at least doesn't go completely unused--you can buy it (regardless of class) from Octham the Grocer in the Awakening expansion pack. Additionally, it has slightly different stats in the console and computer versions.

Splintered Key

Item ID:bdc120im_lock_pick
Type:Plot item/Key
Description:A long, thin sliver of wood with a slight curve to the end.

This is kind of strange. The ID indicates that you should be able to find this during the Dwarf Commoner origin, but not only is it not available, it doesn't even open anything if you do get it. Possibly a remnant from a cut location or sidequest.

Tattered Notebook

Item ID:gen_im_gift_tatbook
Type:Gift
Value:8 silver
Description:The pages of this water stained and dirt encrusted notebook are falling out. That it was dug up by a mabari probably did not help.

Gives +5 approval from any member you give it to. The description indicates that this was supposed to be one of the random items Dog can dig up. Probably cut because a dirty, falling-apart notebook is not a particularly appealing gift for anyone.
